I searched the Internet the other day to find a website that fits this excellent title. How does one have an awesome site? An informative one was easier, I thought. Such a challenge appealed to me. What are the elements? Surely I could find examples?
I found two, actually, but the first one swept me away. As an artist and aspiring designer in my youth, I related to the Awwwards site for the best designed websites of the month--the year--and in the world for 2012. Mesmerized, I looked briefly through all of the examples, then went back and studied each one. They did not all appeal to me, I must admit, but diverse subjects 'fit' diverse people, and I suspected the choices were made by multiple judges.
The designs themselves proved to be awesome. Subtle colors warred with blatant splashes throughout, but the informative nature obviously conveyed the intended meaning of their beautiful designs. Yes, color appeals to me, but design is uppermost. Struck dumb for literally hours, I studied them all. I was indeed charmed.
The judging method follows: "The awards (are) for design, creativity and innovation on the Internet, which recognizes and promotes the best website designs in the world." The judges are a "jury of some of the most important designers, bloggers and Internet Agencies." Their goal is to build a community for the designers to achieve their best. You surely will agree many the designs are well-chosen. If my eye had been more attuned, perhaps I could have said all of the designs were well-chosen. For those of you designing your own website, here you will find much food for fodder.
About the second site I mentioned? I will say that it was more informative than awesome, but you will have to be the judge. I suspect that the non artistically inclined will relate to the more scientific nature of Hongkiat.com. In my search for an informative site, I was directed to one page of this site: 50 Informative Well-Designed Infographics. The site says, Infographics is a combination of much information explained in graphic form.
Quite taken by this site, but for different reasons, I proceeded to work my way through it. The title gives the clue. 50? The amount of material here is staggering, and you will be captivated to spend hours checking out the 50 ideas. It was a lot to take in. Later, when I returned the next day, I learned the true nature of the website. If I thought that arm of the website was staggering, I was in for a surprise. The rest of his site fits more into the 'endless' category of information for use in Internet Business.
Hong Kiat is a young man centered in Malaysia who runs this website. I came across an interview with him but could not find it again, so cannot say for certain, but I believe his site ranks sixth on Alexa, and has millions of visitors. I know I will return many times to mine the gems from his material.
Both of these websites fit the title. The diverse judges on the first site, and Hong Kiat and his crew on the second site, certainly achieved the fulfillment of "An Awesome and Informative Site." They achieved it "in spades."
